Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets

Phoenix Mercury at Atlanta Dream (+1.5, 188)

Cappie Pondexter is making everyone forget about teammate Diana Taurasi.

The guard dropped a career-high 29 points in a 95-80 win over Connecticut on Tuesday, draining 12-of-18 shots. The win improved the Mercury to 6-0 against the Eastern Conference this season. The performance by Pondexter was especially big for Taurasi (17 points), who still is finding her rhythm after returning from a two-game suspension.

"I didn't have the best offensive outing the last game, so I just wanted to come out focused and give my team some energy today," Pondexter said. "We're very focused on this road trip. We want to start the second half off right, and these games are very important."

Atlanta is 5-3 straight up at home this season, but has won just four of its past 10 overall and is allowing nearly 82 points per game.

Pick: Mercury

Connecticut Sun at Indiana Fever (-4.5, 143.5)

Do the Sun have the Fever’s number?

Indiana easily handled Connecticut to the tune of a 14-point win earlier this year, but the Sun stunned the entire league by posting a 67-61 win over the Fever to snap their franchise-record 11-game win streak.

In the win, the Sun were paced by Lindsay Whalen, who had 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists. But the Sun needed every ounce of Whalen’s effort, thanks to her team's season-high 26 turnovers.

"The fact that they got 50 percent of their points off our turnovers is incredible," Sun coach Mike Thibault said after the game. "We lead the league in fewest turnovers, but on nights we have them, we throw them around. We should start autographing them for the people in the stands. It's terrible."

Look for the Fever to make the most of the Sun’s errors this time, and the final result to look much more like the team’s first meeting

Pick: Fever

New York Mets (-137)
Thu Jul 30 '09 12:10p

The Mets despite all the injuries and front office buffoonery are winning. They’ve won four straight heading into today’s double-header. A sweep would also give the Mets a new record for most consecutive victories at Citi Field. The Rockies would appear to be ripe for the taking considering they’ve lost 20 of their 22 road games in the series.

Johan Santana will face Jason Hammel in the opener at 9:10 Pacific and New York backers can get Santana at a discount price of -137. Granted he’s not having a Cy Young type season but when he’s on, he’s still one of the most intimidating pitchers in the league.

Santana, who has never faced Colorado, is 7-2 with a 1.86 ERA in 10 starts at home. For our purposes today we’ll forget his road struggles. At home he’s been dominant. The Rockies who are facing their first three-game losing streak in nearly two months will send Hammel to the hill. The former Devil Ray prospect is 5-5 with a 4.28 ERA. Where Santana has struggled on the road, Hammel has prospered going 4-2 with a 1.93 ERA in ten games outside the Mile High city.

Over his last three starts Santana is 2-1 with a 2.18 ERA. In their last 10 games the Rockies are hitting just .232 against lefthanders.

Hamel is 0-1 in his last three outings with a rocky mountain high ERA of 5.52. The Mets are hitting .259 against righties over their last ten games but certainly not a huge advantage.

If this game becomes a battle of the bullpens, the Mets will have the advantage. The NY pen is ranked 6th in the majors with a combined 3.61 ERA and a save-to-blown save ratio of 26-12. The Colorado bullpen is ranked 26th in baseball with a whopping 4.86 ERA.

The numbers certainly don’t favor the Rockies in the opener of this twin bill and most of the time, the numbers don’t lie.

Take Santana and the Mets in the opener with a slight lean to the UNDER.

Ny Yankees vs. Chi W Sox Ny Yankees
-125 at BOOKM > 13h.
At 8:10pm our complimentary selection is on the New York Yankees over the Chicago White Sox. Former Yankee Jose Contreras was originally slated to start this game but an injury to Bartolo Colon moved Contreras up to the Wednesday start and now the Sox will move righthander Gavin Floyd up one day to start in this one. Yankee lefthander Andy Pettitte has been in the Majors 15 seasons and he goes from facing a starter that is a year older than him in Contreras to now facing somebody who is 11 years younger. Both of these starters have the same record at 8-6, but Pettitte has won his eight games with an ERA more than 1/2 run higher than Floyd, a testament to the excellent run support that the Bombers usually provide for the veteran southpaw. This is especially true when Pettitte pitches on the road, as in his last five starts away from Yankee Stadium in 2009, his pin-striped teammates have scored a total of 35 runs and they are 4-1 in those games. Floyd hasn't faced the Yanks this season, but in the last two years, he's made three appearances against them and it hasn't been pretty as Floyd has a 6.75 ERA in 16 innings. Heading into this series, New York has won 10 of the last 13 meetings, including five of the last six played in Chicago. Take the Yankees. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.

Oakland Athletics vs. Boston Red Sox Total
9½ un-120 at SPBOOK > 6h.
Take the Boston Red Sox Under 9.5, This pick falls into one of my top MLB systems and both of these starters have pitched solid lately. Jon Lester (9-7, 3.79 ERA) has an ERA of just 1.83 since May.31 which leads all AL starters and opponents are hitting just .202 against him over his last 10 starts. Gio Gonzalez (2-2, 7.75) is coming off his best start of the season holding a very powerful Yankees line-up to just 1 earned run and 2 hits over 6.7 innings and that was in New York where the balls have been flying out this season. The O/U is 0-8 for the Red Sox in their last 8 home games against a lefty starter and the O/U is 1-7-1 in Lester's last 9 starts after a quality start in his last outing. With the first 3 games in this series going over the posted total I look for a pitchers dual here Thursday afternoon. Take the Under 9.5 as my MLB Bonus Play for Thursday afternoon.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. San Francisco Giants Philadelphia Phillies
-125 at BODOG > 15h.
The Phillies travel to The City by the Bay for a four-game series against the host San Francisco Giants with the first game set for Thursday night at 10:15PM Eastern Time. The Phillies are 40-21 (+16.5) when playing against a team with a winning record in the second half of the season over the last 2 seasons and 20-9 (+13.9) in road games when playing against a team with a winning record this season. Philadelphia will face a Giants defense that has only allowed 3.7 runs per game this season. That is not a concern as we see the Phillies are 51-26 (+25.7) when facing NL teams allowing 4.3 or less runs per game on the season the last 2 seasons. Philadelphia will send right-hander Rodrigo Lopez to the bump with his 3-0 record and ERA of 3.09. The Giants will counter with Jonathan Sanchez who is 3-9 with an ERA of 4.92 this season. Both teams have played well in the home/road situation with Philly going 31-15 for +18.8 units on the road while the Giants are 33-15 at home for +16.7 units. The runs scored differential favors the Phillies here with a 5.5 runs per game average on the road and the Giants only average 4.6 runs per game at home. The differential increases when comparing them against each teams starter with the Phillies averaging 5.5 runs per game against left-handed starters and the Giants are averaging 4.0 runs per game when facing right-handed starters. On the technical front we see that the Phillies are 22-5 their last 27 games as a road favorite and 9-2 their last 11 when installed as a road favorite of -110 to -150. The Giants are 7-19 the last 26 starts by Sanchez when he is an underdog and 6-22 overall in his last 28 trips to the bump. We will back the champs here as they grab a victory in game one over the Giants on Thursday night.

Graded Selection: 2* Philadelphia Phillies 4 San Francisco Giants 3

Thursday's Lineup
100 DIME ---- MILWAUKEE BREWERS (with Gallardo) -1 1/2 RUN LINE over WASHINGTON NATIONALS (with Martin)

Honestly, I don't even know where to begin. This month of July, with the exception of the last two days (two very tough, close losses) has been a hot bed of cash. I've never seen so many easy winners in my life and today is no different. The Milwaukee Brewers are going to plant a big, fat "L" on the foreheads of the Washington Nationals this afternoon for a number of reasons.

First off, have you seen how poorly the Nats have played on the road this year? 12. And keep this in mind... they just took two of the first three in this series with Milwaukee, so coming in they had 10 --- yeah, 10 road wins all season long. That's worse than San Diego. That's worse than Pittsburgh. That's the worst in Major League Baseball and I don't see it getting better anytime soon. Looking back at the first three games of this series, it's obvious why Washington was able to grab two wins right off the bat: Poor Milwaukee pitching. The Brewers have basically become Yovani Gallardo and four #4 starters, and today the young righty looks to stop the bleeding.

Gallardo finally settled down in his last start (coming in off three shaky starts), pitching 7 1/3 scoreless innings in a 4-0 win against the Braves. He allowed just four hits and four walks, striking out six in his best performance since July 1st. Ironically enough, that game (the July 1 outing) was also against a team from the NL East. In fact, if you look back at his 2009 performances vs. teams from that division, he's 2-1, working 22 1/3 innings allowing just ONE earned run. His lone loss was a 1-0 setback to the Mets in which he struck out 12 hitters. Gallardo recently had a conversation with future Hall-of-Famer Trevor Hoffman about not "wasting his pitches" and running up his pitch count. Although his walk total in the last game was a bit high, he still has taken Hoffman's advice to heart and really wants to finish today's game with under 100 pitches.

There's more. Not only does Gallardo own the NL East, he owns the daylight. His daytime ERA is a full run lower during the day (2.35) than at night and his opponent's batting average against is a sizzling .190 at home. He seems to bring his A-game when he's pitching in front of the home crowd, especially when a crappy team like Washington has come into his place and taken two of the first three. There is no way in heck he's going to allow the Washington Nationals to take three of four on their home turf... he wouldn't be able to live with himself.

Now, let's talk about his opponent... J.D. Martin. A very small sample size to work with, but we do know this will be his first appearance on the road as a professional pitcher. He's had all sorts of experience in the minors as he was drafted in the first round of the 2001 supplemental draft by the Cleveland Indians. He was recently called up to Washington after a solid stint at Triple-A Syracuse, coming to the Nation's Capitol with a 2.66 ERA and an 11-3 record. However, in his first two starts with the Nats things have been a little shaky. A 7.50 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP is hardly someone I'd be excited about sending to the hill when I knew my counterpart was going to be Yovani Gallardo.

Look, he might come out and surprise us for a few innings, but in the end the Milwaukee bats will figure him out and make him wish he was back in Syracuse. The Nats are 12-43 in their last 55 road games, dating back to last year, and have dropped 7 of the last 9 in Milwaukee. The Brewers always seem to take care of business when they are a decided favorite of greater than -200 (24-5 in the last 29) and they've won 7 of their last 10 with Gallardo on the hill when he is coming off a quality appearance in his last start. This one is going to be ugly as the Brewers win by at least 5.

Thanks Cork! Brewers game today...Football season..

Appreciate the Davis and Fazzini picks. Thanks for getting them Cork! Davis can be shaky but Fazzini is on such a roll, going to go with the brew crew as suggested. I am a big Gallardo fan, hope he has a good outing. I usually just go with Jordan and Fazzini but am keeping an eye out for other good handicappers...

d1g1t I probably will buy Jordan package for a year. He has the proven track record..Any comments? Is that a good purchase? So many recommendations for football season...Who is everyone going to follow?

Thanks! Been sports gambling all my life...
